I really enjoyed our first project brief.  We were asked to produce a self-representation of ourselves through various mediums:

  • 6 x photographs
  • 3x videos
  • 3x audio clips

I enjoyed finding ideas to express myself creatively although, I am hoping that my description of creativity coincides with that of our mentors’.  I was quite confused by the idea of the assignment at first but with deeper thought and through physically working on the task I’ve given it a good try.  Enjoy:

Photographs which represent me:

Firstly, to me a ‘selfie’ is a photograph of oneself taken by oneself.  Usually your arm will make an appearance in the photo also.  Therefore, even though I am in the image on the polaroid- this is not a selfie.  I was trying to achieve a creative depiction of myself.  Firstly, I wanted to create photos which showed important things to me: my family, my friends, my partner.  I wanted to have polaroid images of important events in my life as a creative representation of me without capturing mundane images of my ‘everyday life.’   I wanted the background behind the polaroid to be the view from my window, my view of the world: what I see everyday.  I also thought this was quite creative, and in my imagination this idea worked really well.  But, this idea did not succeed due to lighting issues, so I chose to photograph them on the wooden table which I sit at (near the window) and look out at the world.  It’s a space where I can contemplate.  The polaroids also mean different things.  A polaroid of my family: my family is such a vital part of me and have basically made me who I am today.  My friends: people that have become more in my life important since moving out of home– a family away from home.  Certain events pictured in the polaroids have played a special role in my life and each have individual meaning.  I also wanted to have my photographs as creative but also fitting a theme.

Text which represents me:

“I am just a small piece of inquisitive media floating around in a world full of media. I am a photograph. I am a video. I am audio. I am text. Everything I am can be shown through media. Who’s to say that I am any of what I have shown you. Do I even exist?”

The text that I have written to represent me focuses on media and how consumed I am in media.  I wanted to interconnect the assessment and ideas from the course to my representation as a person, and I feel it is quite accurate.  I am a piece of media floating through space.  I am consumed in media at university and at home– I use Facebook, Instagram, Skype my parents and so many more.  There is always media around me or involving me.  If I can be represented through video, images and audio, I would think that my textual representation of myself as ‘a piece of media’ is 100% accurate.

The video footage I have created is a representation of my daily life.  The video of me typing is me, my daily life, how I work and study.  When I study I cannot listen to music or have any distractions.  I need to sound of silence and the clicking of my keyboard– anything else is too distracting.  I wanted to utilise video footage to share this but also manipulate the silence of the auditory factor of the video.  Most people think of video to have an abundance of sound and noises, but I wanted to purposefully highlight the quiet in which I like to work.  My second video if a typical representation of me.  I have always been a 12 hour sleeper.  If any one offers me a nap– I will never say no.  I took this representation in a humorous manner so show a less serious side of me that I’m sure many of you can relate to.  My final video is a simple explanation of who I am.  I live with my partner and we spend most of our nights working on our computers on university and freelancing work.  He’s a photographer (hence the camera) and we pride our selves on our colourful collection of books.  We always have music playing in the background of everything we do.  Music is pretty central in my life and my partner is a key aspect of my life which is why he makes an appearance in the footage of my self-representation.

Audio which represents me:

Audio 1: I am a people person

Audio 2: Some one else’s description of me

Audio 3: Music

My first audio representation is a recording of me talking about my speaking skills.  I love to talk and I love people to listen so using an audio recording with no visual distraction seemed like a good way to convey this.  My second audio recording is some one else’s opinion of me.  I didn’t want to have a representation of myself completely form my own point of view so I asked some one who is closest to me.  I asked him without any preparation, so hopefully his answer is close to, if not true.  My final audio recording is of me singing.  It shows my creativity as I love to create music– composing lyrics and chords is an outlet for me so it only seemed fitting that I include this part of me (my voice) through an audio recording.
