Question 3: Blow Up is a 1966 film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni.
In this scene note the choreography of the actors, camera, frame and focus. As covered in the lecture describe the things Antonioni would have to consider when directing the actors and the camera.
This scene would have required precision when it came to planning out the actor’s movements. As there are quite a lot of “obstacles” in the set, i.e planks running through the shot, and other pieces of furniture, the production team would have had to organize and aesthetically visualize exactly what they wanted to achieve so that it worked in line with the directors vision.
Camera angles in this scene are very unique, in particular at the start of the scene when they walk through the narrow door way. The angles that the actors are shown in, for eg. Showing only the bottom half of the bodies would have meant they had to rehearse the scene with the actors so they knew exactly where they had to be positioned in relation to the camera. The framing and lighting would have been pre planned, possibly weeks before, and a character board would have been made to know exactly what was being shot from where. A shot sequence would also have been written so that all members of the crew were aware of the action taking place.
The actors would have worked closely with the director as it is evident that there would have been detailed cues for them to follow so that the scene flowed smoothly.
