Notes From Paul

In today’s tutorial, we did a brief screening of our work so far and met with Paul to discuss further advancements of our project. The number 1, number 2, number 3, 4 and number 5 things we can take away from this class and the following meeting are AUDIO AUDIO AUDIO AUDIO and also audio.

In my shoot with mum and dad I completely ignored audio, perhaps slightly out of fear. Sound has never been my strong suit and it is definitely time for me turn up the volume and address this at full force. Paul showed us a 30 second clip from an SBS documentary, and highlighted to us how there was only one camera used to shoot. The good audio allowed the editor to jump around between the footage and made the transition of shots on the screen literally unnoticeable. Voice is what will carry many of our subjects, if not all. A lot of our time has been spent meticulously prying over what questions we should ask in order to evoke a good performance. We have spent hours attempting to derive themes and structures that we can follow and evolve into further notions of meaning. But we have been neglecting audio and without this, our film could fall short of competence.

With all of this in mind, we are going to fully invest ourselves into creating quality work, that our subjects will be happy to attach their names to. We as the filmmakers get to listen to our artists and hear they in full, our priority must be ensuring that our audience is able to as well.
