Smaller Things

I talked about Ko briefly in my previous blog post and the possibility creating an exploration of his character. There are multiple levels to his identity and I think that this might be something worth exploring as a way of improving myself as a filmmaker. I had a conversation with him, just to briefly delve further into his mind and see if there was anything that struck me. I decided not to record this conversation, so we both didn’t feel too restricted or obligated to say something profound – which allowed him to just talk and be himself. Ko was wearing a short sleeve t-shirt which revealed the slight tattoos on his upper arm. I remember him saying something about these before, but as it didn’t really fit with our conversation I didn’t press the issue at this time. Ko had previously told me that these were Burmese tribal tattoos. They’re so small and perhaps insignificant, that you wouldn’t notice them unless you looked closely – just a few dabs of ink on his tan skin. They seem trivial in looks too, its quite literally just a few dots that you could easy mistake for moles at a quick glances. I think that this as a part of Ko’s identity could be used really well as a metaphor and even a direct recollection of his past. I need to explore ways in which that can be achieved through filmmaking, whether this means creating work that leads a viewer’s eye to his tattoos as a source of information or whether I leave this to be rather ambiguous. Regardless I think that there is a lot of background noise in any environment that can sometimes take away from an inner sense of consciousness. Our conversation itself wasn’t striking to me, but I think that I am gaining a sense of attentiveness that guides me to finer to details of noticing.
