Week Twelve

Our final week of semester two and Go Out Into the World. This meant finalising our ideas and more importantly our projects. My final piece has the following synopsis:

Thathi’ is a conversation between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The project developed from the idea of creating a linear piece exploring subjects of distance. Through means of participation, this initial proposition of distance matured into a form of connection between the two subjects.

The film features a snapshot of Thathi’s holiday in Melbourne. At 85 years old, Thathi does not have many opportunities to venture away from her living room, her television and her beloved Bold and the Beautiful. A walk in the park, is no walk in the park. It is a rare moment of fresh air and this film captures the simplicity of the conversation that follows this venture.

Thathi is someone who has always been fascinated by photographs and each inch of her home is covered in these memories. This project acts as a means of recollection, as a physical image for for an ageing mind.

There is a lot more to say about the project and the semester as a whole, though I think I will leave that to the more formal reflection we have to submit for our final assessment. I will say that I feel that the footage I have captured of my mum and thathi, above the project itself, is a physical asset that is completely  invaluable and I have this class and participation to thank for capturing that.
