Week Eleven

I have begun to transcribe the main conversation between Thathi and mum. It is a time consuming process but hopefully one that is useful in the editing process. Kim and other classmates have boasted the benefits of transcribing so I think it is worth trying to see if it is advantageous for me and something that I will be able to use in future films. So far, my fingers hurt and I am tired. I have only done five minutes of a twenty minute clip, but I can see how this will be beneficial in the editing process. Mainly because it ensures that I know my footage thoroughly. I think that this will help me when deciding what to omit from the final film.

 

I also conducted interviews with our Japanese students. We have two girls who are 20 and 21 years old. Both are quite shy and still in the process of learning english. As such the process of participation was a bit difficult with them. I interviewed them together, which was unadvisable, however they were too shy to be interviewed alone. This was a bit problematic as I felt it took away from the personal nature of their stories and they were kind of bouncing off each other and agreeing. Their answers also involved me quite a bit and I feel as though I directed the scene too much. For example they gave many one word answers and were only prompted by myself asking perhaps too specific questions. I am not sure if the footage I have shot with them with suit the overarching themes of my film that I am trying to convey. The situations did not seem to link with any of the other footage I have shot, but this is something I will need to think about and develop further.

We also spoke briefly about music and how it can add to or hinder a project. I think that this is something I will look at last to see if it will benefit my project, though at this stage I am far from thinking about music.
