This week I conducted a final shoot with my mum and my grandma. My grandma tends to stay indoors and is wary of going outside. My mum always makes it her mission to get her outside, whether that be for lunch or just for a drive. This visit we have been taking lots of walks with our dog, mum pushing Thathi in her wheelchair. I usually walk ahead with the dog and listen quietly to their conversation. I have found these topics to be quite compelling, both looking at the nature around us and reflecting on their lives and experiences. Mum stated that this would be good to capture. Thathi also has a poor memory and during these walks she asks me to take photographs so she can keep these recall these later on. I decided this week, to mic them up. I borrowed two lapel mics, a zoom recorder and hid each under clothes and in bags.
We went to the botanical gardens, so mum could show Thathi her school nearby. I shot for about twenty minutes with a single shot, my uncle standing behind me and directing me as I walked backwards into crowds of park goers. And my participants just spoke – they had a regular conversation. I am not sure how this will translate, hopefully the editing process will give me a larger sense of whether this footage is even useable. Perhaps it will be something that needs to stand alone. The footage is literally a snapshot of Thathi’s holiday and a moment of solidarity between her and my mum. I’ll have to wait and see where this footage fits.
