This week we looked at the best way to interview a subject. I find interviewing people quite daunting and probably one of my weaker aspects of filmmaking. We looked at examples from Errol Morris and his methods of lingering the shot and therefore his audience and subject. This is interesting as it allows the participant to finish their thought process. Often when I interview someone I feel a need to cut off the silence and not permit space to progress naturally.
These techniques are really useful to me as for the previous project I conducted phone interviews and the general consensus was that the form would not be sustainable in a long film. The audio quality is also too poor to use with multiple voice often blending and making the stories hard to individualise and denote to one character.
I need to further investigate the ways in which I interview participants and allow them to conduct themselves in a way that is honest to themselves and their stories. I think that letting them speak in a comfortable and natural environment will also create a better conversation.
