Week Five

This week we continued working on our documentary idea and presented our essay films to the class. It is always good to get feedback from others, especially when working on something individually.

The conceptualisation of my essay film was well executed, but now I face the difficult task of translating my ideas into those of other people. I am not sure how I will progress my film from here, though I do not think that it will be too similar to this presentation. My essay was very rhythmic and assertive of my ideas. It was very much controlled and dominated by my voice narration. I want to try and subvert my next project and create something more symbolic.

Something I want to carry over to the next project is the personal nature of my essay film. I think that this is a telling aspect of the project so far and from the class feedback that seemed to be the aspect that resonated best with the audience. This week, with the feedback in mind, I kept up the conversation between myself and my participants and tried to source some new subjects for my documentary. I reached out to our family friend who had moved from England to Australia when she was younger, leaving behind her entire immediate family. I also spoke with my friend who is currently on exchange in China and is dealing with the present and new feelings of detachment from her life here in Melbourne. Hopefully reaching out to a wider range of participants gives me a larger perspective of distance in its entirety.
