This week we finished off our presentations and were introduced into the concept of video essays.
I have never made a video essay and despite having watched quite a few, the concept of creating one seems quite foreign – and daunting. However in class, Kim showed us a couple of examples of the essay film in action. One was quite structured and presented everything I would conceive to take place in an essay film. These formalities can we a little boring, especially if the topic they are portraying isn’t one of the audiences interests. This slightly worried me, as my topic is quite personal and as such I suspect it initially won’t appeal to many people. However, the second essay film we were shown was much more reflective. The informal side of this is much more attractive to me. It is kind of like how we are first taught at school that there is a certain way an essay must be written – that being introduction, three body paragraphs and then a conclusion. You soon find out that this isn’t the only way, or necessarily the right way. I guess it’s the same for an essay film, there are certain ways to do it but they don’t need to follow a concise set of rules. There are elements they must include, but the way in which you present those elements is up to you. Hopefully this insight will allow for some flexibility in my work.
