Ted Shoot

Over the weekend Nicolette and I conducted a final shoot with Ted. This one, unlike the previous, focused on Ted and his art beyond Pink Lemon.

We got a lot of footage. A lot. There was over 50 minutes from the x200 of just Ted talking. The majority of this content was really interesting, and Ted was able to conduct himself comfortably to the camera after being exposed to it a few times now. He is also explicitly passionate about his art and this conveys well across to an images and hopefully to an audience.

The coverage and range of footage made editing a little more time consuming. We first went through at edited the 50 or so minutes down, cutting out a few ums where necessary and refining things he overlapped on when answering questions. This left us with a just under twenty minute cut of good content. Such a large amount is hard to discard, especially when our initial aims for this semester were to create profiles just a few minutes long. So we decided to create a short teaser with perhaps the idea to make something larger in the future.

In terms of working with Nicolette this weekend I think that we were again able to work to each other’s strengths and consequently benefit the project as a whole. Nicolette was able to evoke a strong performance from Ted, particularly with knowing him so well. I think that I was able to then come in as an impartial view particularly when editing. There were something’s Ted said that Nicolette may have found irrelevant as she knew his stories and background. But as I was unfamiliar with his work, I think I was able to approach the editing with a critical and impartial eye, similar to that of the intended audience.
One of the benefits of this project is that it’s process does not conclude during the final assessment period. This is a task that we will continue to work on and hopefully refine our skills in the future as we do so. Paul made it clear that this semester wasn’t about created something complete. I think that this a good thing to keep in mind, as tangibility doesn’t always equate to personal improvement. It also makes any feedback on this final assessment more useful as we will be able to learn from this in a continuous process, rather than that of one that ceases as does the semester.
