Beyond Single Shots

Today we used the external monitors in class. This was really cool having never done this before and technically speaking it was good for me too see how to correctly connect them to the camera, adding production values into my core set of knowledge. This is important to my aims of this semester and I my main wish has been to expand my knowledge of filmmaking. This task was also good as we used two different cameras, set up with two monitors. This allowed us to see the different angles of a scene we were trying to recreate, in real time. It was interesting placing myself in this situation, as you are used to seeing the footage side by side in the editing suits and in the postproduction stage. This, I think, gave me a sense fundamental understanding when working towards my goal of filmmaking consciousness. The visualisation of shots placed next to each other, significantly improve your ability to shoot to edit. This task allowed me to recognise the importance of reviewing footage as a production process and sanctioning changes as a shoot develops. It is important to be able to see the two shots together, regardless of the presence of a physical monitor – I need to be able to visualise being in that situation again with two cameras hooked up to two screens. This creates an overall understanding and cognisance of the broader picture, to see the larger shoot beyond the single shot.
