I’ve been brainstorming ideas for our next assessment at home this week, because I was too sick to come to school. Parts of this assessment are confusing me – like all things at university I can’t tell if it goes over my head or if it’s very simple and I’m over-analysing.
My group has received the central media idea of technology. My first idea of how to explore this in a media artifact (which we decided to be film) would be to explore the changing technology in broadcasting.
Here are some examples of my recent brainstorming on my laptop:
Idea Number 1
Old tech vs. new tech in media. Resurgence of vinyl and film. Specialty practices, expensive, exclusive, but takes talent/money/thought and effort to create.
New tech: easy accessibility of new tech, opening up to different audience, ease of use.
Idea Number 2
Technological advancements changing audience – introduction of internet, opening the channels wider to new readers/viewers. The ability for texts to become viral, the overwhelming popularity of some artifacts (short videos/ youtube videos/ also items with larger production behind them like TV shows like Game Of Thrones). Also technology changing the audience’s habits, shorter attention spans, hyper attention.
So my first idea was mostly to do with the creation of media, and the second idea was mostly about the consumption of media. Gloria also recommended going forward in our readings to the week on technology and grasping a firmer idea of what we will be looking at in class.
Idea Number 3
Technology opening ability to more people to create media. No longer completely segregated to professionals. Advancing technology has meant that recording technology has become common place, everybody has phones with recording devices on them (photography, film-making, music making). People can make music on their computers, people can make films on their phones and edit in their homes. There are such things as iphonographers. It no longer takes traditional education and financing of productions to create media. This has been because of the advance of technology. We could people who create things media independently without traditional training through the help of new technologies.
I think this third idea has the most traction for me. My plan is to post these in our group conversation on facebook and see what everyone thinks.
