Agent Carter follows a typical hero’s journey…

The character/story of Agent Carter is interesting to examine from the perspective of how it fits with the typical hero archetype. While she obviously differs from the typical superhero in her gender alone, the character essentially follows the classic hero’s journey.

Where Batman rises from a childhood of poverty and Iron Man transitions from supplying the terrorists to fighting against them, Agent Carter’s hardship is the gender inequality of the society and times in which she lives. This is a strong plot point in all three Agent Carter videos we watched.

This theme can only be unique to the female character and it also comments somewhat on gender politics. Therefore it could be seen as a unique theme within the Marvel Universe, but if we examine the common hardships faced by the studio’s other heros (financial hardship, being the ‘odd-one-out’), we see that Agent Carter too overcomes a lack of belonging.

So really Agent Carter follows a fairly common hero’s journey – she overcomes the hardship of not belonging in a man’s world and rises above it to become the ‘hero’ she is.

From a transmedia perspective, Agent Carter appears in five feature films (two yet to be released), the ‘Agent Carter’ One Shot, two TV series’, a game and four comics. While she isn’t as major character as, for example, Iron Man, she really does play a large role in the Universe.
