We all strive for power

“Power system is the most essential technological feature of the modern world.” That’s the claim that Watts makes in this week’s readings, and I tend to agree with him.

He considers power more important than the creation of roads in the development of civilisation. This couldn’t be more correct. You can still drive your car on areas with no roads. But can’t still watch TV with no power.

How important power is becomes apparent when the power goes out. A few months ago, I awoke to no power and could not boil the electric kettle to have a cup of tea, have a shower with my electric hot water system, watch episodes of Gossip Girl on TV. I even had to get dressed in the complete dark, and to my horror attended a Network Media symposium with my shirt on backwards!

Bottom line, power is everything.
