PB1 – Week 2

One of the films from the High Risk Dressing exhibition we visited in the design hub particularly inspired me and supplied me with some ideas that I might want to incorporate when I begin to create my own fashion film. The film was of a woman doing a fashion show inside what looked like to be a bedroom. The way the outfit changes, the ‘catwalk’ and the music was all edited together made the film fun, creative and cool and it had a really nice vibe. I found this piece incredibly aesthetically pleasing because of this.

Another fashion film I found stimulating was the Comme des Garçons video* played in class. The reason I found this interesting was because it actually creeped me out a bit, by the music they chose and the jarring shots. It was fascinating how it would look like a still image but with slight movement from either the model or the garment they were wearing. This only added to the eerie effect of the video that I think they were going for, making it memorable and stand out from other fashion films that I have seen before.

The final example of film that I found visually interesting was the move Marie Antoinette*. The whole way throughout the film I admired the dresses and costumes that were just so beautiful and well made. Without these stunning designs I don’t think the film would have been as aesthetically pleasing as it was.

As I have never made a fashion film before I really want to learn the different types of techniques and styles that surround fashion. From what I’ve learnt so far fashion film has so many different and unique ways you can create within it, I want to be able to actively identify these techniques and apply them on my own work.

Out of this studio I would love to learn and develop my ability to make an object, statement piece or pieces stand out in a film as previously what I’ve worked on has been based around an issue or a person following the narrative within that. What I would love to broaden my creative horizons in the sense of fashion and film fashion in places other than the catwalk, in environments you wouldn’t expect a fashion film to be shot.  Also to create a video that showcases new ideas and experimentation within a field that I have not made a film in before. I am hoping to get out of this studio a piece of work that successfully reflects my love for fashion, being aesthetically pleasing and engaging. The fashion films I draw the most inspiration from are not narrative based but showcase the fashion in a form that is outside of the box and not what you would expect to see. Originality and authenticity in the way I produce my film is something I look forward to exploring throughout the semester.

I have always been inspired by fashion and enjoyed fashion film so I am excited to be able to create my own piece of work within this area whilst enjoying my time as I do so.
