Drinking for England

A clip from Brian Hill’s Drinking for England was shown to students as an example of the documentary form during the lecture. Although
admittedly, I did not necessarily understand the purpose of the scene (which can be forgiven considering we only saw a section of it), I confess that I was taken aback by the social actor’s “cool guy” singing, emphasised by his head bobbing and casual consumption of cigarettes and alcohol. Beginning the clip with a traditional interview scenario certainly deceived me of his sudden performance and though I don’t know much about the origins of the film, I cannot help but think of the performance as a satirical outlook into his (the actor’s) life.

Film & TV 2 Goals

In this initial stage of the semester, I think that a producorial position for the documentary would be beneficial to my learning, especially with my newly acquired internship at PinoyTV/Tone Control. Although Paul has assured us that there will be no definite roles given out unlike last semester, I believe that it is essential for me to build on my communication skills with external sources and my confidence in discovering stories to pursue.

Most challenging for this semester will be time management, or to be more specific, organisation and juggling time between my studies, work, internship and music. As a producer who not only has to come up with content, I must also be aware of time constraints not just for me but my group mate/s and other individuals we have to deal with.

Ultimately, it is my goal to use creative pursuits in order to gather resources that are out of the ordinary and work towards the creation of unique and innovative work. I wish to work in a small group consisting of 2-3 people, and to create the documentary film on a topic of personal interest or curiosity.
