By the time it reached week 3, the True to form studio were given a series of film, documentary, clips, etc. from Paul. Which intended to give us inspiration and to think about what the final project for this studio would look like within our group or individually. Paul gave us the freedom to explore camera technicalities and elements, audio production, and narrative in film throughout these few weeks leading to Week 7, where the pitch for our final project will be held.

One of the films that Paul showed us was a 6-minute short called, ‘Nostalgia For The Light’.

This particular short documentary incorporated plenty of camera techniques in its shots as well as, audio, in which was collated together and became something that was gravitating to watch. The film from my perspective is about nostalgic memories that the narrator tries to inform us as audiences, in a way that it was ‘his’ nostalgia and it was his ‘story’ (which, it was!). But, the message that I took from the film was something that the narrator was informing me as an audience indirectly. For me, he was telling us that nostalgic memories or memories from the past should not be taken for granted. Therefore, the film made me think about my own ‘story’, which is vital in media projects because then, it brings an idea that this project was something morally meaningful and was true to its content.

Furthermore, the film was also interesting because it incorporated just a montage of various different shots. But, with the moving music, in the beginning and end, narration that created a sense of ‘storyline’, various atmos sounds that produced an idea of ‘space’ or time of day and all these little aspects of the film, complemented the idea that the narrator is trying to bring us as audiences to his ‘nostalgia’. It was simple but was beautifully captured, it had narration throughout the film that made it a captivating experience and it was edited like if the story was the ‘guide’ that lead audiences up to the very end. Thus, as a media student, it was also incredibly inspiring to watch.

For me, this short definitely inspired me to think about how various shots or montage could narrate a meaningful story. I think that this was a great example of how a simple project could generate a heartwarming experience and a valuable message. Thus, this project showed that it was true to form and content – the aims of our studio. Exactly, the reason why this will be one of the main examples that I will come back to towards the final project. Since I am trying to explore camera movements, angles and frame further throughout the semester I hope to be able to capture footages that could potentially be as beautiful as this one with my own touch and to be able to produce a project that incorporates a plot audiences can connect with just like, ‘Nostalgia For the Light’.
