Blog #1: What Online media means to Me.

When it comes to the Online world or a more fancier way of calling it, Web 2.0, there is an abundance and not to mention, progressing amount of ways that the Internet allows our digital generation today function in everyday life. Be it, watching TV online, archiving pictures, reading the news to even creating this whole new profession for some digital users or influencers. Upon coming to the first class of Thinking in Fragments studio we learned that there are several formal and content qualities that the online screen or new media provides. These unceasing and broad qualities are characteristics that depict the various, aspects of new media within the Internet or online space. Thus, what made it successful until this day. To elaborate this, I am going to explore YoutubeRed as one of the many online projects that possesses a crucial online quality we discussed in class, which has impacted the way my behavior in my everyday life have shifted for the most part. Let me explain:

I, for one, always wondered how fast the online space and new media has formed, so quickly before my 19-year-old eyes. As a result, there are things that sometimes I forget I used to do that today’s digital generation call, traditional. And a lot of these things are of the online media nature. One big of a deal traditional media entity that has completely faded away in my life is: TV. You know TV? That square, 32-ish inch screen sitting alone in your living room? That one and not Netflix.

Recently, I have been a huge Youtube and Netflix fan. When 5-6 years ago, I used to watch various shows or programs on TV, now I watch them on Youtube and even more recently, Netflix. Besides the point, when we were asked to bring an online project to discuss in class this week I brought Youtube Red and the show Escape the Night to the table and apparently, so did everybody else in my table, except with a different show or channel. Which brought me thinking:

YoutubeRed is under it’s parent company Youtube, just like it, it is a American video-sharing website that provides entertainment services and purposes. But only with subscription. It provides various unlimited shows, movies, music, etc. specifically tailored in the Online space as it is only accessed through Youtube’s website. So essentially,

I managed to stumble upon one of many YoutubeRed’s shows called Escape the Night:

Created by Adam Lawson, which stars Youtube’s very own influencers. Besides that, the show is considered as a web-series or what Youtube call, Youtube Red Originals. It tales a modern meta fictional murder mystery reality competition, that is less than 30 minutes per episode. Which honestly, any Youtube enthusiast and active consumer person like me, would appreciate.

Furthermore, the show is an example of the point I am trying to make here, while the new existence of a web-series like Escape the Night that overflowed on the Internet lately and services or networks like Youtube Red provides made me understand why the idea of TV (the actual, physical one) have been completely demolished. Here is why:

The idea of online screen or new media production like Youtube Red, essentially creates an intention of easy accessibility. This allows convenience for the user or consumer to always be engaged. Simply, that is the one crucial formal quality called, portability. Unlike how I may caught on programs on TV before, easy accessibility and thus, portability of Youtube Red today, allows me to watch multiple programs in any computer or digital and Internet-generated devices. Therefore, gave this characteristic of the Internet and online media as a place that not only produces various media projects, but also a whole different meaning to my everyday life in terms of my television viewing habits.
