Blog #13: What I would do to improve.

This week is the last week of submission. Throughout this studio, particularly this project, I have learned a bunch of different skills from pre-production to post-production. These skills include camera operation, sound or audio technique, interviewing, editing and much more. This project has been the most difficult but also intriguing. The reason that it is difficult could be because it is done in a short amount of time and it is intriguing to obtain that many knowledge in 6 weeks time. Although our group had a rough path creating this project together, we manage to minimize all the problems we had on the way and formed a film that looks decent.

The things I would do to improve our documentary would probably start from the production stage. On the pre-production stage, our group had pretty clear visuals in our head of what the documentary would look like. We have discussed it thoroughly among each other, planned how it was going to go and consulted it with Rohan. However, we weren’t able to make all of them come true. This could be because when it comes to being on the field none of us were conscientious enough towards our duties. This means that we didn’t exactly pay more attention to most of the little things that come with the technicalities, such as background ambient noises, focus on visuals, exposure, lighting, white balance, etc. As a result, we were put in a stage where we had to return to the shooting location repeatedly and some days, the shots or recordings didn’t come out as useful or relevant and did not make it to the final cut. If I were to go back to do this again, I would make sure that I had provided a list of things we should be doing and be looking for. Also, I would make sure that the participant was at his/her convenience and comfort during interviews, as well as, I would make sure that the location we decided to do any main footages like the interview would be shot at the right place where not many ambient sounds can disrupt us during filming and that all the equipment works appropriately.

During our edit, the only thing I would do to improve our cut is probably audio. If we had more time to record right audio recordings of interview, atmosphere and more, we would have gotten a more clean sound throughout the cut that doesn’t need too much editing. Nevertheless, I know that our group has worked very hard to make sure the edit fits in with the other groups and worked almost every day in the past 3 weeks to fix most of the problems and fulfill feedbacks given by our supervisors. Thus, even if the project was not the best, I am sure that all the things I learned were one of the utmost beneficial things I was able to obtain from this project.
