Recently I revisited one of my favourite childhood television shows ‘Malcolm in the middle‘. a sitcom running from 2000 to 2006. Watching it I noticed that the opening credits used both footage from the show as well random, possibly archive, footage. This site states where each clip comes from range from movies tv shows from clash of the titans to WCW heavy weight championship. The opening credits is about 20 seconds of fast pasted shots mixed with tv static and zooms. There is footage of the central characters as well as cartoons and pretty random and crazy footage. The opening credits sets up the theme and premise of the entire show, a crazy dysfunctional but ultimately hilarious family.
This demonstrates that archive and unrelated footage can be used to convey meaning. This can be used in my upcoming project brief 3, as by combining different archive footage I can convey meaning to my subject, even if its not in a literal sense.
