Ways Of Making – Goals

I chose Ways of Making as I wanted a course that was more practical, so that I could improve and work on my film making skills. The previous course I did, The Video Micro Essay had more of a strong focus on editing in Premiere Pro and creating video essays. I enjoyed this as I was able to adapt to using Premiere after having used previously Final Cut Pro X and Sony Vegas Pro, however although initially I enjoyed being able to use any existing footage to my liking, I did miss the satisfaction of editing a piece of work that I had a part in actually creating.

In this course I would like to further learn the proper technicality behind the tools used for filmmaking as well as developing and producing creative content. I am interested in learning the technicality of cameras including proper set up, movements, using a dolly and tripod as well as learning post production technique.

In particular, I would love to learn how to do colour grading and experiment with colour use in both production and post production, as I really enjoy films that utilize colour. In particular I like the colour use in directors like Wes Anderson or Stanley Kubrick’s as well as other films like Heathers, Touching the Void, American Beauty, Pan’s Labyrinth (to name only a few). I like seeing colour in film for both aesthetics and symbolic purposes. I find the music video Tous Les Memes  by french artist Stromae to be a great use of colour as well as camera work.

I would also like to utilise and familiarise myself with post production programs such as adobe premiere and after effects, more so the latter. I believe this course will give me knowledge on the practicality of film making as well as allow experimentation with film making techniques and expand my creative capabilities.
