The piece of text I used as an introductory piece to my film was a quote by Chuck Palahniuk, a novelist and freelance journalist best known for his novel Fight Club. “Your handwriting. The way you walk. Which china pattern you choose. It’s all giving you away. Everything you do shows your hand. Everything is a self-portrait. Everything is a diary.” This is from his novel Diary and I chose it as I think its a great explanation on the idea of a self-portrait. Every action we do and every step we take is ultimately an expression of ourselves. I wrote it out in my own handwriting as to further demonstrate the meaning of the quote as my own handwriting reflects a part of my own individuality.
The first image I chose was an image of my desk, with the morning sun hitting it, which is first place I go in the morning to do my makeup. I accompanied this image with the sound recording of my laptop starting and some typing and clicking noises of the mousepad. I like that the image is shown and the same time as the computer start up noise, as it is an insight into the start of my day. The messy state of my desk also is a good reflection into my habits and environment.
The second image is my own shadow surrounded by the shadows of leaves. I really like this image as I believe is an unique way of showing a glimpse of my physicality, but is vague enough to leave mystery. This is then accompanied with the a soundmix of the general ambience I hear when I am out for a walk, including the wind, cars, my breathing, foots steps, and birds. I then added a shake effect to the image to feel as if the shadow is moving with the wind.
The third image is a picture of myself reading a book on the train. This shot is fades in as you here the sound of a train running. The image is then overlaid on top of a video of the window of a train in motion. I overlaid the image on top of the video as I felt it was a good representation of the atmosphere I personally experience on the train, my book and the window sights.
The last video I used was a video of myself throwing a ball with my dog, which I think demonstrates my love for animals and also showed a insight to my home environment.
I think the most successful part of my edited media is its continuity. The photos were able to be play at the same time as the sounds which also then flowed into the video clips. I could have improved the film by trying to cut it down and make it shorter, to meet the 1 minute requirement. I honestly found it a bit difficult to fit all of the components as well as adding transitions in just 60 seconds. However, overall I am happy with the final product as the video flowed nicely as a narrative; and it felt like the video transported you into my own personal world.
