RMIT media

Hello again.

I just finished off a conversation with an RMIT student representative, discussing the relevance of a subject in the B’Comm (Media) course. It was really good and enlightening. I thought I’d address this in my blog, considering it is an interesting topic and a insight into an RMIT student’s thoughts on ‘Communication Histories and Technologies’.

I find that the subject is quite bland, as most would agree. However, my concern and discontent with the subject is not because of the low level of entertainment, which seems to be quite a popular target for its wide criticism, but the actual content and how it will help me in my desired industry. I am an ambitious filmmaker, so I chose this course hoping for a really intense and informative course. However, sadly, in the 17 weeks of my time spent at RMIT my education has been close to dismal. I am not attacking RMIT, as I have been involved in film since I was 11, but I feel that some of the things addressed in this particular subject amongst others, comes close to useless in the actual media industry.

What I think it should focus on, rather than how the advancement in communication technology becomes hazy in terms of being beneficial or corrosive to human progression in society, I think we should focus on how we can use communication technology and communication in itself in the media industry to prepare us for employment. The common generalisation that “media degrees won’t get you a job” is becoming more believable, as the things we learn are irrelevant, mostly. I am just expressing my concern for the students of this course and trying to address to RMIT that maybe some re-modification to the course could be beneficial. It is a crying shame that degrees have become less in value to employers in the job market these days, and yes, hands on experience is vital to future employment, so I urge RMIT and the Media staff, hands on experience and a more in depth education is required for school leavers with such interest and high education to be able to even pass the entry score to get into the course.

If my credibility as being an 18 year old first year isn’t enough to see my point, I ask you to take into account, that other than my media course, I took the initiative to establish and fund a film company fo

r fun, which my collaborator and I have already found paid work in the thousands of dollars for fees. This is hands on exp

erience without a degree, to which I am already breaking the entry point into the film industry. So please take into considera

tion that maybe, we do need more hands on and in depth education in the media course.Thank you.
