With very few days left until our final audit…

to begin my night of epic bloggery catch-up.

Week 10’s lectorial focused on the concept of ‘Institutions’; which, by now, I know very well. We discussed the key features of institutions; and then compared some institutions we encounter in our day-to-day lives (Facebook, ABC, Community Media) on grounds such as relationship to audience, values, relationships, etc. The overall exercise was kind of dull in my opinion, but that could stem from a reluctance to study the area due to my topic covering it (I’m so good at procrastinating, I basically deny handouts of information on key topics I need to cover in my assignment!). Nonetheless, covering the topic in the lectorials was very helpful, as at the time I was finding definitions were conflicting from author to author, so to at least get a basic understanding of what we were supposed to be looking at was pretty invaluable.

From there we reviewed some ideas of how to approach the video essay task. The more I heard about ideas on structure, the ability to break formality, and the idea of exploration; the more I realised that these video essays are already abundant on YouTube — in fact I watch them very often!

Take for example Sydney-based YouTuber Friendlyjordies. Yes, I have blogged about this guy before but the thing is that HE’S A GREAT EXAMPLE! Take his video reviewing the Turnbull government’s intern-incentive in the budget.

Jordies uses a lot of techniques to frame his points – humour, referencing reports/articles, and comparisons. The referencing technique he uses actually inspired me to do something similar for my video essay, which was quickly green-lighted by my groupmember Asha, a fellow Friendlyjordies fan.

Pretty much, the week 10 lectorial was really, really helpful for getting my group kick-started on PB4; and it really set the tone for the last few weeks of the semester for us with a high work-ethic, and a lot of fun creating our project.
