Our discussion for last week’s pop culture tutorial was surrounding musical manipulation through remixes, collabs and mashups. This resulted in me searching through my music over the weekend to see what existed in the way of the three in what I listened to – and I discovered some pretty cool tracks.
Remix
“A song which is a modified or new version of an original.” – Urban Dictionary
An example I found of remixing was the Stint remix of Young The Giant’s “Mind Over Matter”
Collab
“Collaboration. Some people use it when making videos. A collaboration video.” – Urban Dictionary
An example of collab I found was the Record Store Day 2013 release from Manchester Orchestra & Grouplove – titled “Make It To Me”
Mashup
“v. To take elements of two or more pre-existing pieces of music and combine them to make a new song.
n. A song comprised of elements of two or more pre-existing pieces of music.” – Urban Dictionary
An example of this is the mashup of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and Blink 182’s “What’s My Age Again?” by Youtuber TimGMashups.
