Week 8 already!
Today’s class was relatively chill. We started by listening to a Radiolab broadcast on the science of sleep, which provided an interesting example of audio essays we may end up producing for our PB4. It was just a shame that the subject content was so… very… boring…..
I’ve never been a fan of science, but then to have the examples of the slow sleeping sounds of a baby/cat just made me totally tune out. Maybe it was also the ramming of one similar voice over another. These are all things I want to consider with my group when we produce our audio work. We need enough variety and charisma coming through to keep the listener interested.
Brian also gave me an amazing idea for the group assignment when he mentioned using songs to split up segments of our audio essays. Low and behold, the idea of discussing Disney as a media institution came into my head (because why not fill our audio play with short clips of some of the greatest. film. soundtracks. ever.?)
By the way, Randy Newman’s songs incite SO MUCH NOSTALGIA
for me considering he composed music for two of my three
favourite films as a young child – Toy Story and A Bug’s Life.
and suddenly our group had a new found excitement for this assignment, as I think we all grew up watching a lot of Disney films as kids. With that considered, we sat down and discussed our plan of action for this weekend – to all watch a Disney film and analyse how this film portrays something about Disney as an institution – their values, ideas, and audiences.
With that said, I’ve gotta get on to my assigned “reading” — 2008’s WALL-E
