I felt a little obliged, when given an assessment to create an edited creative self-portrait, due at a time that coincided with the opening round of the AFL Season, to make a football related creative self portrait, after a tumultuous season that will go down in the ages undoubtedly. I instantly set about acquiring a chest mount for my GoPro, feeling as if that kind of shot, up close and personal whilst handsfree was essential for something like just having a kick around the field. I was able to get a head mount, which did all I really needed it to do, coupled with a friend of mine filming me from a distance.
The main idea that I had in mind was a shot of me, directly in front of the goals, taking a shot at goal and just completely missing the mark, which was obviously for intended comedic effect, and I feel like that was potentially the most successful part of the self portrait.
Also, in terms of the audio, an earlier cut of this I used a song which I recorded once, just instrumental that worked pretty well, but the ‘song’ didn’t actually go for longer than 40 seconds, and I had a thought bubble to use my friend Dainis’ track “Ten Thousand Hours” as it’s a pretty cheesy song about how you need to work hard to get where you want to be, and was in a similar vein to what I wanted from my track, but was also much better.
For the title of the piece, it could have been anything but I thought it would be decent to fit in with the shot of the Mark Mercuri cover with the headline “Mark of the Century”, even though there was no marking involved.
Something that was slightly unsuccessful was that some of the footage was lost, leading there to be less to edit, but I guess that is a silver lining in itself in giving me more to think about through less to work with. Also the lighting in the GoPro and the camera seem to be quite variant sometimes.
