GETAWAY

GETAWAY

Today I wanted to discuss what I learnt whilst filming the getaway scene during my group’s shoot on Sunday! It was probably one of the best learning experiences I had during each of our shoots and wanted to go through the process of blocking and safety checking a scene involving a car.

Firstly; I’d like to preface that I had no idea we were still using the car in this scene, as I thought it would be a safety hazard, but, as I’m one for ‘going with the flow’ I didn’t want to argue, and as the long day was coming to a close and Olivia was feverishly trying to clean up before her parents got home; I was put in charge of the scene.

So; we charged up a camera once again and redid hair and makeup for the shoot at hand. It was quite a hard scene to visualise, as we’d put the least thought into how we’d like it to look. Firstly I wanted to get the characters leaving the house easily from different angles. One was a side angle where I hid behind the door and got them exiting quite dramatically; next, I shot them from behind and followed them out the door and down the steps. Succeeding the exit scene, we then had to film the car getaway.

I was really nervous to film this if I’m honest, though we carefully blocked how our lead would get into the car, after fighting with the lead girl, and requested that our driver not drive too far down the street, or too fast. In the end, everything went extremely smooth; I got the scene from different angles and was happy with most of the footage that was gathered. I’m finding it’s much more beneficial to get an abundance of footage rather than just the planned shots, just in case we need more.
