19/8 sym-pos-ium…

faded hands

This weeks symposium arose the idea that the industrial system determines learning capabilities. In the sense that some learn better in the morning, evening or mid-day, meaning that students are being disadvantaged in their learning environment as it is not catered for the individual. I felt this in high school, learning better in the morning and as the day gradually progressed my mind switched off and i couldn’t find the motivation or focus to listen or do. University i have found has catered much more to the individual with the ability to schedule our timetable suitable to our needs. Adrian mentions the ‘single speed system’ where we all learn different things at different speeds and learn through different senses (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). I know that everyone is unique, but the human being was made to have the same amount of access to the brain weren’t they? So if we all learnt specifically catered to our own needs, everyone may end up with the same outcome and isn’t that what the intention of the educational system is?
Even being a part of this diploma (media comm) i am surrounded by people who find particular aspects easy to understand while i do not, and then people who are struggling while i don’t mind so much. I felt particularly disadvantaged in the HTML code exam, but then having people around me who knew what they were doing were able to help me in preparation. So that is how we cope, we allow others to lean on us, in hope that at a time where we are struggling, we can lean on them, and that is how i have found myself coping throughout my educational years. The world most certainly would  be a different place if we determined our own learning capabilities.
