Response to Another Groups Presentation

I will be responding to the first group who presented their idea on Monday for the class. Their idea is to an stage interrogation scene, focusing on one individual in a science fiction setting, inspired by films like the original Blade Runner and it’s sequel Blade Runner 2049. Through this they will be experimenting with different lighting contexts.

Their delivery of their idea was a bit convoluted, but I was able to gather that they would be exploring reflecting light, water refraction and investigating the directional nature of light through fog and smoke. They emphasised that they would be doing a lot of testing, which I think will be extremely beneficial, as they are attempting to achieve a lot of radically different lighting environments, so I think testing will give them an idea of what is achievable.

They used visual clips really well to exemplify the aesthetics they are hoping to achieve, but I think having a powerpoint would have helped communicate the idea even better to the class. The presentation was very short and could have been more drawn out, by going more in-depth into areas like the challenges they will face and camera coverage.

It was hard to hear the feedback from Robin, Paul and Juliet, but I did hear Juliet speaking about the difficulties of using the refracting light and her telling them to be careful about the texture that they shoot on, as that will effect the light.

Overall I think exploring different textures and forms of light will be a really good avenue to go down, but I don’t really think having the science fiction element is necessary and may actually add unnecessary difficulty to their investigation. I can see that they are influenced by the cinematography of Roger Deakins and while I do think that having a point of  reference will be helpful as a guide, it could also create unnecessary challenges if they try to overcomplicate their idea.
