Everything’s Coming Together (but time will tell if it’s for the better) – This is Serial #10

Today was an interesting class, we were both very productive, yet also disorganised at the same time. This was the class where we really had to evaluate where the hell we go from the pilot and how to fix what went wrong. We had a long conversation about whether we should keep the same roles for each episode or rotate the roles around and we ultimately decided that we would keep the same roles. I was initially going to co-direct and focus more on the technical aspect of the episodes, but I decided that although I really want to direct I really need to focus on production design and lighting as no one else was assigned to those roles and they’re incredibly important. I am still a bit sad that I won’t be directing and also a bit worried that mistakes will be made, but I’m resigning myself to focus on my role and hopefully knock it out of the park. It will also allow me to dip my toes into the art direction realm, which I’ve always been interested in, but never really had a chance to get involved with.

That is an example of how the class was very productive, the media students were really knuckling down to prepare for the presentation. Brooke and Beth were editing together the episode as I was able to get the files to them finally, while we talked about the pre-production nitty-gritty. The disorganised aspect of the class came from our communication with the writers and trying to work out their contribution to the presentation and how that synched up with the media students. They were talking about their plan with writing the future scripts and that’s amazing, but it felt like we were on two different pages and we couldn’t quite ascertain their vision going forward. We were eventually able to crystallise the logistics  for how we’d tackle the presentation and discussed how our production schedule would suit their writing schedule. The class ended and we were starting to get on the same page, and I feel like were are communicating better, but hopefully after hearing what they have to say in the presentation we can finally coalesce and become the Dream Team we are truly meant to be.
