Earlier in my blogging for this course I talked about learning how to frame and which formats to use specifically for web content. That is, that typically posting this content in a square format is more consumable for mobile devices on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and is something that is prudent when creating a web series. This is a topic that I’ve discussed with members of our group and we’re currently exploring how we can tailor our content depending on the platform and even what platform we could potentially release our series onto. I think that there are positives for all platforms, but the problem with Youtube in particular, is that there is an oversaturated market for comedic content, especially as our concept isn’t very original and the inspiration it borrows from is very apparent (IT Crowd and The Office to name a few). So it’s going to be all about how we execute our series that sets us apart from other content. Facebook is great as it’s easily shareable within your social network, but can be difficult to bring people back to your content and plant your metaphorical flag in it’s domain especially as there’s a lot of plagiarism on Facebook with video content. This is made more difficult considering that the content landscape for Facebook is extremely short, relatable comedic videos and our episodes won’t adhere to this, in length and the relatability aspect (we’re making a show with vampires and clones people it’s not exactly everyday life).
At this point myself and other members of the group just have to keep doing as much research as possible into possible avenues and markets for us to tap into. What worries me is that like other web series I’ve made, you could spend months making something that you feel truly happy with and then put it on YouTube and it gets a couple of hundred views, but apart from that goes absolutely nowhere. Is that a failure? I don’t know, we will still have the experience of producing the web series, but I really want to have something that can be an example of what I’m capable of. We’ll continue to talk about this in our group and hopefully come to a conclusion.
