This week we were finally given a taste of what was in store for our web series, after the previous class where there was a lot of hyperbolic despair about miscommunication and disorganisation. The writers came back to us with numerous scripts, all of a similar premise but with differing types of humour. Reading through the scripts there were a couple I found quite funny, I was not blown away or laughing out loud, but they were a good base to go forward with.
I particularly liked the first script on the list, it felt accessible in both it’s humour and that it would be fairly simple to shoot as it only comprised of two locations and three characters. It being simple is what we needed for the pilot as it provides a good introduction to the characters, setting and the world we’re trying to build in our web series. We had a read through with both the writers and the media students which was fun because we were all swapping characters to play and it made the scripts come to life and feel less like just words on a page. I think most of my group were in agreement that we liked script one (Anthony’s script), but we also like the all out hilarity of Montie’s and that we want to continue this going forward. We discussed with the writers at length what we did and didn’t like about the scripts and what we wanted going forward. We made it clear that we wanted more character development as the scripts often felt like they were relying a little too heavily on exposition rather than using the characters as a way to create the quirky situations that would come up due to being vampires and clones etc. We were all in consensus about this and writers left with a few pages worth of feedback.
I’m really happy with the team we have and the writers wish to be as involved as possible, it really puts the earlier doubts to rest.
