Good form Studio Update – week 9

Aine – This week it feels like everything is ramping up, groups are doing their own thing to push their web series closer to release either by filming, planning or editing in the edit suites. It’s My group is producing Jeff and Jane’s Quality Fun Times so this week we spent our Monday class in the editing suites putting together some teaser trailers and then on Tuesday we arrived at 9 am at RMIT’s studios in Building 5 to start filming. 14322698_1205437979477086_6545984610597983280_nOur web series has a lot of little details to establish the absurd comedic aesthetic that we’re going for so we all had to bring props from home just a few being a guitar, ukulele, a homemade bong and a copy of Mein Kampf.  We also got access to the prop room which allowed us to fill out the set with couches, blankets, armchairs and rugs.  We decided to rotate roles with each group member having a go at lighting, sound, camera operating and directing. With four episodes to film we decide that while one episode was being filmed the director of the next would sit down with the script and go over how they want to approach their episode.  We got two episodes filmed before we had to stop due to unforeseen circumstances involving our writer/actor’s health, so we’ve rescheduled to film episodes two and four next Tuesday.

My group spent our workshop in the edit suites looking over the footage we’d shot the day before. We had to work out an issue with one of our episodes being too long, this is an interesting process as it forced us to think on our feet and problem solve.

Rory –  At this stage in the semester our groups have been busy working separately on our own web series. Some groups are finalising the pre-production phase, while others have begun production. On the Monday class, our group, Cleaned Out, were busy finalising scripts, doing table reads and preparing shot lists and prop lists, basically just lots of lists. All this preparation has been great for when we shoot, it has enabled us to get the gear set up and get straight into knocking over scenes. After class our group been busy filming our episodes with filming planned for a minimum of 2 shoots a week. However, our first shoot (like any first shoot) took a while for us to set up and get rolling. But the experience of the first shoot helped a lot for our second shoot and we got into it much quicker.

The Wednesday class was the quite similar to the Monday class, which was a lot of preparation to shoot some more scenes for our web series. The shoot wasn’t the best one we’ve had, it took us a bit longer to get the ball rolling, but once we did we managed to get some of the planed scenes.
