What I’ve Learnt: I feel that during this semester the majority of my learning occurred in (and after) our Lectorial sessions. At the start of the course I was already somewhat experienced with the practical techniques and ideas of production and so the theoretical information that we covered in our lectorials provided fresh knowledge which challenged my existing ways of…

Media 1 Blog: Finest Moments [Semester 1]
For me this semester has brought about mixed feelings. On the one hand I’ve begun university life and have had a lot of new experiences. However, to be 100% honest, the Media 1 course wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be. I enjoyed (most of) the lectorial sessions and thought that the information given was generally fairly interesting. However…
Project 4: Reflection
Click here to visit our website and podcast series. This was an interesting and challenging group assignment and it certainly made me think (theoretically and creatively) in ways I hadn’t before. I think that initially the tasks ambiguity and unrestricted nature confused a lot of students (myself included) and after forming our group this factor lead to a somewhat delayed…
Technological Determinism [Week 12]
I think the idea that technology develops its own path is an interesting one, and I think that the ideas behind the ‘Technological Determinism’ theory hold a fair amount of merit. Looking at the past and present of technological advancement, we can see how technology (in many ways) may bring about its own development. For instance, when existing technologies fail…
Media 1 Practical [Week 12]
In our final practical workshop for the semester we continued to work hard on our group assignments. Jeremy, Cheyenne and I finalised our podcast recording plans and established the manner in which we would progress through our discussions of mediums. At this stage the website which we plan to host our podcasts on has been constructed and a separate page…
REMIX Methods & Forms [Week 11]
As our topic for the week was ‘Remixes’, I thought it would be interesting (and entertaining) to look at a number of products which demonstrate aspects of the remix form and consider how new meaning has been created from existing pieces of work. Throughout Dan’s presentation, I continuously thought of different products which could be used as examples of the…
Media 1 Lectorial [Week 11]
Today we examined the art of the remix; looking into Eduardo Navas’ ‘Remix Theory’ as well as many other ideas and discussions that concern remix culture. Dan’s presentation covered the history of the remix, the copyright difficulties faced by remix-artists, the concept of ‘deconstruction’ and more. I found the idea that a remix relies on its source materials to be particularly thought-provoking.
Google as a Media Institution [Week 10]
In our week 10 lectorial, we were asked to brainstorm the ‘institutional characteristics’ of a few significant media institutions. The group I was in looked at Google, examining a range of factors which contribute to the corporation’s institutional nature and public image. Accessibility: Google prides itself on being the most popular (and universally recognised) internet search engine (and technology company). Their…
Media 1 Lectorial [Week 10]
In this week’s lectorial session we looked at the concept of ‘institutions’. This involved looking into how we define an institution, as well as how these institutions operate and exist within our society. Every institution has certain values, principles and rules which assist in constructing its personality and public ‘image’. It was interesting to consider institutions as being concerned with…
Media 1 Practical [Week 10]
Today we continued to work on our group projects, in this session specifically focusing on developing our ideas and presentation format. Jeremy, Cheyenne and myself had each selected a certain area of our very broad topic to research and develop ideas for – my designated area was ‘interactive media’, and I decided to look specifically into video games and social media.…
