Story Lab [part 20]: Writing as Atticus

I’ve unofficially taken on the role of ‘being Atticus’. Once I’d written out his first few ‘Investigation Updates’ we decided that it’d be best if I just continued to focus on all of Atticus’ future blog & Facebook updates (for the sake of continuity and a consistent writing style).

Writing Atticus’ ‘Investigation Updates’ quickly became my most complex role in the final stage of production. I had to try and ignore the fact that I knew the ENTIRE 1901 storyline and instead place myself in Atticus’ shoes – as he slowly discovered fragments of the story. This was tough to do, and I had to continuously refer back to the evidence archive, script and previous ‘Investigation Updates’ in order to make sure that I wasn’t repeating any information or giving anything away TOO soon.

Writing as Atticus was definitely an interesting exercise in creating writing. The process of separating myself from my knowledge of the story definitely tested my writing skills, especially when it came to ‘acting’ as if I (Atticus) were surprised/excited by the discovery of ‘new’ information.

Anyways, part of the reason why I chose The Story Lab was because I wanted to refresh & enhance my creative writing skills. I’d say mission accomplished.
