Night Shoots: Experiment 1 (concept)

As part of my exploration into the night-time landscape, I want to test out shooting footage from the perspective of a car, driving alone on the roads. I wanted to find a way to explore these visuals in a more in depth manner – not simply just collecting shots from a car – finding a way to add meaning & motivation to the shots.

I realised that I could try to create a sense of speed and energy with the car footage – editing back and forth between quiet shots and shots of the car moving. I think quick cuts to the car’s movement and mechanical sounds would nicely contrast the peaceful nature of a quiet street.

At night, when the soundscape is less polluted, you can hear the sounds of a car much more clearly – and there’s a nice dynamic between the quiet ambience of the road before and after a car drives past.

After collecting POV footage of the car being driven around various streets, I’d like to aim to edit this footage together with footage of quiet scenes, such as a intersection or street light.

This is how I imagine this short exercise playing out:
1. Start with a quiet scene, silence of the night is calming and we hear little
2. Cut back & forth to shots of the car, implying that it is approaching the scene
3. Car passes through frame (maybe, perhaps we never see car fully in frame?)
4. Car fades into the dark, scene returns to being quiet

This would let me experiment in numerous areas that I’m interested in: sound and editing in particular.
