Film 3: Part 3 [3 August]

Today our class took place in the edit suites of Building 9 as the beginnings of the Post-Production process were introduced to us. We began by setting up our personal folders on the media server and then establishing our organisational skills and procedures within Adobe Premiere.

I’ve been using Premiere (and the other Adobe CC programs) for a few years now so I’m fairly comfortable when it comes to navigating the interface and working on projects. HOWEVER, this session was still really helpful as many of the organisational tips and tricks we were shown will definitely enhance my workflow and efficiency when working on future projects and class exercises.

Up until now I have stuck to editing my projects within a single sequence, however it seems that using a combination of sequences for different scenes/segments, versions of the edit, and experimental effects is the way to go. I have noticed that a single sequence can become fairly unwieldy after a long period of editing and using multiple sequences would certainly reduce this issue.

While it was fairly trivial, it was interesting to learn the reasoning behind footage folders in Premiere being called ‘Bins’. I’m very interested in the editing process and to better understand the craft, I feel that it’s important to understand and appreciate the history of video editing. A lot has certainly changed since the early days of cinema, however the technology we have now allows us to edit much more efficiently, and I think this is one reason why we should experiment as much as possible when editing – given the useful tools we now have easy access to.
