Media 1 Lectorial [Week 5]

In our 5th Lectorial, we were introduced to our 2nd graded assignment.

After creating a Self-Portrait using a collection of media forms, we now had the task of creating another Media Portrait, this time using a friend, family member, or interesting person as a subject. At first I was confused about the requirement to include a reasonably large amount of ‘found footage’ however, after watching a few of the sample videos – this confusion was replaced with numerous ideas.

After discussing the creative possibilities the project offered, we moved on to talk about ‘how’ we should read and interpret academic writing. In summary, when reading essays, articles and textbook readings, we should:
– make notes and annotate/highlight relevant sections
– read key sections FIRST, establish the piece’s structure before reading from start to finish
– skimming is actually a valuable tool that can be used when reading dense pieces of writing

Before this session, I hadn’t realised that we were required to write a response to each weeks readings. I knew we had to reflect on an aspect of the week such as the activities we took part in or the information given by guest speakers, but I didn’t know that we HAD to focus on the readings in our reflections. So I’ve got a bit of catching up to do.

Anyways, here’s a pretty cool video I found the other day. From GoPro’s YouTube channel, we (as viewers) are given a fairly unique perspective. I don’t have much to say about this one, but give it a watch if you like.
