Media 1 Lectorial [Week 3]

This weeks lectorial session consisted of 3 guest presentations, each with a specific area of focus.

Part 1 [Copyright]:

This presentation focused on various aspects of copyright law, an area which we will have to become familiar in when creating our future projects. Learning about the different areas of copyright, such as duration and infringement gave a great deal of insight into the world of presenting, monetising and displaying all kinds of work.

It was interesting to see how it is determined if a piece of work is ‘substantially similar’ to an existing work. Learning how music licensing works was also useful as I’m sure this knowledge will be relevant in future uni/professional projects. In all my past projects I have kept away from licensed music, choosing to use royalty free tracks or even record my own soundtracks (as I did in yr 12 Media) – however I know the time will soon come when I have to purchase rights to use a licensed song in a project.

Part 2 [Exploring the Unknown (Kyla Brettle)]:

I found Kyla’s presentation to be really interesting. I certainly see the advantages of entering/exploring the unknown, and in the coming years I definitely want to travel more and challenge myself to develop new skills in new environments (This is a key reason why I would love to study abroad for a semester).

Her advice to “become ‘one’ with the technology [of your field]” had been given to me before, but now that I’m studying media, and aiming to enter the media industry – this advice is more relevant than ever. I have become fairly practised in using my DSLR but hopefully, I’lll gain more experience in using it as well as other ‘media technology’ as the years progress.

Part 3 [General Production Advice (Paul Richard)]:

The key point I got out of Paul’s presentation was: always be prepared and organised when working on projects/productions.

His stories and examples really ‘hit home’ the importance of being organised (while also flexible) on set. After a fairly significant disaster (to say the least) which I experienced while filming a year 11 media project, I have definitely tried to be more organised in my work, and more prepared to tackle the inevitable issues which arise during production.

That’ll be all for this post, now to share another video… Here’s a ‘What if _____ directed _____?’ video, this one explores what ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ would be like if it were directed by Wes Anderson. As a fan of Anderson’s style, I think this short ‘what if’ trailer is really well put together (using ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ trailer’s soundtrack).
