Media 1 Lectorial [Week 2]

This post is a little belated, but better late than never…

A large portion of our Lectorial in week 2 focused on the idea/notion of ‘intentional noticing’. We are constantly bombarded with sensory information from within our environment but how much of this information do we actually notice?

One of the readings discussed how (intentional) noticing can be utilised as a powerful ‘professional tool’, assisting in our approaches to learning via experience, and in our research. To be able to do this more effectively, the reading suggests that we can train, or “sharpen” our noticing abilities. For instance, a suggested ‘training’ activity is to “set yourself to notice the moon whenever it is in the sky”.

The reading on noticing provided a lot of information which not only took me back to my VCE Psychology days but also linked up with the Lectorial’s other key point: that ‘Media is Everywhere’.

This idea is certainly true, and we can see ourselves being surrounded my media more and more these days, from the development of the smartphone, convergent media and countless new technologies and advertising schemes.

Anyways, that’s all for this post. As usual, here’s another video to consider watching. Today it’s a video essay which explores the way in which Jackie Chan masterfully combines the ‘Action’ and ‘Comedy’ genres. The analysis is really interesting:
