So, we’re a couple of weeks into the semester, and we’ve already made a few basic shorts here and there. I’ve worked on different things in the past, such as a web series and other little artsy projects for different assignments, and, as much as I’ve done, over the past couple of semesters, I’ve noticed that I’ve already significantly improved since starting this class. It may be the fact that I’ve been working completely by myself, or in a group of three people max, but because of the fact that, unlike in previous semesters assignments, there are less people, and less restrictions in regards to topic and content, I’ve been able to think more about creative and stylistic choices. Working on the first little project where we had to film a thirty second clip of ourselves doing some sort of action, I had the space to think about specific camera angles, lengths of shots, and completely follow the plan that I had in my head (like, hey I actually followed my storyboard this time!) Now, I’m not shitting on people I’ve worked with in groups for previous assignments (sorry to any previous group members if they’re reading this). I’m just saying that now that I’m going to be working on my own personal projects, I’m looking forward to finally developing my own skills, and my own type of stylization. One thing that I noticed will probably take a little bit of time is getting used to seeing myself on camera. It’s like hearing a recording of your own voice, you’re always going to hate the way it sounds. Sitting in class when my little clip came up on the screen, I felt very uncomfortable seeing myself, and started nitpicking things, such as “oh I forgot to shave before making this, I’ve got a dirty ass mo”, but no one else seemed to notice.
There are just some things that I need to get used to when getting into this type of work, such as how there will always be room for improvement, but that’ll leave space for me to grow. So, by the time this course is over, I’m hoping to have significantly improved my skills on a film set.
