Now, I know week 11 was about two weeks ago, but it’s been pretty difficult for me to blog recently as I’ve had a lot on my plate. But I am back! So, as I am a couple of weeks late, I’ll just talk about what I got out of the two readings in one post, rather than spend two going into depth with each one.
So, I felt that there was a lot of time and words that were used to explain exactly what technology is, which, yeah, they need to establish, but for a generation that is so technologically compatible, I reckon they didn’t need to go into that much depth. But yeah, much of the content in these readings is pretty much what I’ve been researching with my group for the past few weeks.
The first reading explores technologies relation to culture. There were a few pages missing, but maybe that was done on purpose, I don’t know. But basically, this topic pretty much directly related to my group assignment, as we’re pretty much studying a media technology that started because of its culture. At the start of Chapter 1, it asks “how do we live with technology?”. And because I’m so pessimistic, I asked myself “how do we live without technology?”. A world without technology would be pretty bland in comparison to the world we live in. It’s pretty much the cause for a lot of the culture today. Without technology, there would be no movies, no video games, and music would not have been mass produced. More importantly, we would have no internet memes.
The second reading focuses on the Medium Theory. The topic is pretty similar to the first readings, but focuses more on the way it shaped society, instead of just its culture. Looking around my room, I noticed how much I was actually relying on technology while writing this. For starters, I’m using my laptop to type this up. There is a desk lamp next to me, plus the actual room light. And because it’s freezing, I’ve got the heater on as well. So basically, if I lived in a world without technology, I would be sitting in a cold, dark room, not typing a blog post on the laptop that I don’t have.
