Wyrmwood

In reaction to the recent 2-for-1 sale on Blu-rays down at JB Hi-Fi over the weekend, I went on a splurge because why the hell not? Anyways, I found myself holding an odd numbered amount of movies, meaning I could get one more for free. That’s when I noticed this movie on the shelf.

Since I couldn’t really find anything else, and I’d heard a recommendation from my brother and his mates, I decided to grab a copy.

I’d heard other people say “yeah, it was alright I guess”, but since I wasn’t really expecting a five-star masterpiece, I was actually quite surprised at the quality of the film.

This is an Australian-made zombie film, directed by Kiah Roache-Turner. Now, my brother, (who doesn’t really like Australian films) said that they tend to look like they were made in someone’s backyard. So for him to recommend this movie is saying something, I guess. One aspect that I really liked of this movie was the cinematography. It used the handheld camera technique most of the time, and moved fast and rigidly, but was still steady enough to see what was going on. During conversation scenes, the camera would mostly show close-ups of each character, with a canted angle. Another aspect was the way it was edited. Because it was a fast-paced action movie, the whole film didn’t actually have any drawn out shots. Each shot was quick and abruptly cut, which really worked with the pacing of the film. The movie was shot in Australian bush-land, but the saturation was lowered to make the place look bleak and worn down, which looked pretty awesome.

Yeah, it wasn’t perfect, sometimes I could really tell the special effects were special effects, and the camera movement became a little disorientating at times, but it is a crowd funded movie. So if you’re bored at home, or looking for a fun movie for a movie night with the mates, would recommend.
