Week 7 Reflection: The Giving of Feedback

After we watched each others project briefs, we were split off into groups to discuss and reflect on what we thought about our assignments. The following is a summary of what we discussed.

We all mutually agreed that we liked the way that the lighting in the video was organized. It made the whole thing visually appealing. For some reason, we all just tend to like bright stuff. Another point that was brought up was her use of the colour orange. Whether or not it was done on purpose, orange objects became a recurring theme, throughout the video, which was interesting considering how her subject’s hair was orange. The one thing that she just needs to be aware of is the controversy of her content. While it wasn’t a major thing, it would be good for her to be aware that the slightest amount of controversy could end in some form of backlash.

So first of all, don’t be so morbid, you literally freaked out the whole class. But anyway, we were all pleased with the amount of stock footage, and the way he used it. The way that the footage of the rain forest blended in with the original footage of his backyard created a seamless line of footage that doesn’t ruin the immersion with awkward cuts and jumps. While he did use a satisfying amount of footage, we all agreed that he could have asked his subject a few more questions. He did mention that she was very camera shy as she was an emergency subject, but we were all still curious about some of the qualities that weren’t mentioned about her.

We liked the dog. Enough said. But seriously, the focus on the dog humanized him a lot more, which drew an attachment towards the whole video. One of our group members also pointed out the fact that the use of dog as a personality symbol was a clever move. They say that pets reflect their owner’s personalities, and so what better way of describing the subject’s personality than by using their dog? On a different topic, we also liked the intro to the video. It felt very natural. His use of stock footage was very symbolic, which we all found to be an interesting method of use. Only thing was that the audio was a little reverberated. We suggested using a different mic, or recording it in a different room.

I liked the use of stock footage in this video. The symbolism of it blended in well with the overarching theme of the video. It was very well done in regards to formality, and there was a good amount of content about her subject, but I sometimes felt that too much of the video was taken up by the interview. I reckon that she could’ve done a bit more with the intro of the video because the interview begins at the very start of the video, and finishes at the very end.
