This reading was an extract from Keith Sawyer’s Group Genius: The creative power of collaboration (2007). While reading this text, I was curious about the accuracy of Sawyer’s research. (But then again, I’m always trying to doubt what other people say because I’m very stubborn).
So, the reading summarized the flow of group productivity into ten conditions:
- The groups goal
- Close listening
- Complete concentration
- Being in control
- Blending egos
- Equal participation
- Familiarity
- Communication
- Moving it forward
- The potential for failure
I feel like the one thing that connects all of these conditions is the motivation of each group member. For example, the group has a goal, but why does each person want to reach this goal? Is it because of their fear of potential failure, or do they actually want to do the assignment based on genuine interest? If none of the group members aren’t motivated, the project is pretty much screwed. Barely any work would get done, and that which does would probably be adequate. Probably, the one thing to think about before reading into the ten conditions is a way to motivate each group member.
