Week 7 Reading 1

Don’t mind me, just catching up on a few blog posts.

So, last week, the reading was all about non-narrative documentary. Now, I’ll be honest, I was never really a fan of the whole documentary scene, so I was completely unaware of its ability to story tell. I always saw them as a very formal way of presenting information. And, while I’m still not a fan of the whole documentary making scene (each to their own, I guess), I do understand the appeal. For example, we watched a section of a documentary in the lectorial called Gap Toothed Women. It was on the topic of, you guessed it, gap toothed women! I liked the way that the documentary presented a point of view on something as simple as a gap between two front teeth. Unlike something like David Attenborough’s Africa, (no hate against him, the man is a living legend), Gap Toothed Women isn’t just educational and informative, it actually presents an idea that gap toothed women aren’t any better or worse than everyone else. And while it is just a simple topic, it’s interesting how it can go to such depth about it.

While I haven’t really changed my mind on the fact that I probably wouldn’t go into documentary making, I have gained more respect for it. So, kudos to anyone going for that area of film making.
