Week 3 screenings

For this weeks Cinema screenings, we watched a series of French and Australian Experimental films. I’m not really a fan of the whole experimental film scene, and so this weeks watch was a little bit tough for me, but I understand the appeal and the creative decisions behind these films. Personally, they’re a little bit too interpretive for my liking, but the ideas and the concepts that they were trying to convey were quite interesting.

The first film that we watched, Ballet Mécanique, was a little difficult for me to sit through. The whole thing was split into about seven sequences of different patterns of imagery. However, I really did like the message it was portraying. Each different sequence compared different aspects of life to machinery. I found it interesting how it showed the world as clockwork, and how in a way, everything is mechanical.

Sometimes, the films can be a little bit over the top for me. The second film we watched was called The Dante Quartet, which consisted of a string of several different images, but each frame was painted over, and had a different pattern of colours and splashes. Honestly, I did not understand the message behind this film, but that’s just me.
