In our Media 1 Practical, we were split up into groups where we each showed each other parts of our self portraits we made over the week. Each person was assigned a hat from four of Edward De Bono’s thinking hats:
- Yellow: positivity and optimism
- Red: feelings and hunches
- Green: creativity and possibilities
- Black: difficulties and weaknesses
Each person had to state their thoughts about the self portrait that they were just shown, based on the hats we were assigned.
My group discovered this task to be very difficult, as the portraits we were showing were very basic. Since there wasn’t really anything technical we were able to judge about, it felt like we were judging the content in the person’s portrait, and therefore, judging their personality (which was probably the most difficult for whoever was assigned the black hat). Since many of us didn’t really know each other as well, we treated this task as more of an ice-breaker, but I’m sure that the more we all get to know each other, the easier this task will be further down the track. I feel that when we do get to the point where we’re actually trying to make a well edited film, this task would be more productive, as we’re actually looking for ways to help each other improve.
